Top Trends in 2020 ACO MSSP Success

In August 2021, CMS released 2020 ACO performance in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP), highlighting 513 ACOs that realized a total shared savings of $2.28 billion. Leveraging CareJourney’s 100% Medicare Fee-for-Service claims dataset, we analyzed utilization and quality metrics paired with total and per capita generated savings from MSSP participants and quintiled the savings of each ACO.

We analyzed the top and bottom performers to understand how common metrics like PCP visits, compliance with preventative care and care management services, and PMPY expenditure categories do—or don’t—translate into ACO success.
