A decade ago the promise of supplier networks brought the idea of the creation of marketplaces for every industry under the sun. Yet with the dot com collapse, many of these ideas became short-lived attempts to build the marketplace of the future. Part of the resurgence in the use of “supplier networks” comes with the challenge of how to improve supplier insights with lowering the cost and risk of doing business within the supply chain. Recent Aberdeen Research from Supplier Networks: Moving Beyond the Traditions of eProcurement (June 2010) based on 151 survey respondents, demonstrates that supplier networks are providing organizations an opportunity to establish stronger supplier relationships through 33% higher rate of suppliers meeting capability/performance thresholds and 12% higher rate of on-time delivery. Moreover, 100% of organizations Best-in-Class stated using supplier networks as a means to identify new supplier and market opportunities compared to 67% of all other organizations. Supplier networks are still not a prerequisite for doing electronic commerce, organizations using them are demonstrating leadership among their peers by getting the benefit of increased access to suppliers while establishing an ongoing basis for commerce within a common business context for lowering procurement and supply chain costs.
