 | There's little question that server virtualization is the single biggest game-changing trend in IT today. It's not hard to see why: Driving down costs and increasing IT agility are powerful reasons for going virtual. At the same time, it's no secret that virtualization creates some unique pressures inside the data center. For example, companies today have the same or even less time to back up substantially larger data sets and high-density virtual environments. Managing backup windows and successfully protecting data on a daily basis continue to be major pain points, putting recovery and business continuity at risk. According to one recent survey of IT managers in large organizations, nearly half of the data on their virtual systems is not regularly backed up. As server virtualization adoption increases, IT is also pressured into leveraging the benefits of virtualization for their business-critical applications. According to another recent survey of C-level executives and IT managers, more than one-third of enterprises are planning to implement virtualization in the next year for business-critical applications such as HR, accounting, and ERP.
