Visual Technologies: Can the Current Approach Deliver on the User Experience of the Future?

Visual technologies – video, yes, but also cloud gaming, AR/VR, and immersive content – are a game of multiples: increasing numbers of users and providers, engaging with content that is ever-increasing in quality and quantity, further compounded by latency requirements that relentlessly trend towards zero. A demanding problem, that can only become still more challenging as these technologies become ever more pervasive and find new and diverse use cases.

Is the current network approach equipped to deliver on the promise of the technology? Current players would argue yes, and as new streaming and cloud gaming services launch confident guarantees are made about user experience – even going so far as AI-driven “negative latency”. But are these solutions, or are they simply the use of new ideas to paper over the inefficiencies and fundamental challenges of a network that needs revolution more than evolution?
